Apple is #1!
Posted on March 5th, 2010 4 commentsMost admired? Really?
Link to StoryThis story makes sense. Of course executives admire Apple. They wish they could figure out a way to rip people off and get away with it!! Is the American public that clueless? Don’t get me wrong, Apple does make some good looking stuff and they do think hard when they develop something. However I personally can’t get around the fact that they sell hardware that costs them $5 for $100+!! I understand (but do not totally agree to some extents) that business need to make money and needs money for R&D, etc. I just do not think they need to make that much money. They do not need to sell a $800 computer for $1700 just because some people are stupid enough to pay that. So I wonder if you actually admire them after you spent $150 on an iPod instead of a SanDisk for $80? The products may be easy to use and look sexy but how can you admire a company that fleeces you so badly? Maybe I just have issues? Maybe I am just cheap?
What do you think? Should Apple be admired? Does the American public admire Apple that much? Do you feel that your iPod or iPhone was honestly a good deal?

My iPod Touch (2nd Gen 8GB) was a FAR better deal than all my previous HP iPaqs, costing 2-3x more and doing half as much not nearly as efficiently. I’m not an Apple fan typically, but yes, this device was a good deal and I haven’t even turned on my PocketPC since. I don’t have to reboot it nearly as often to get things done and it’s easier/faster to use for similar tasks.
I do however LOATHE AND DESPISE iTunes. It has no proper backup for the iPod Touch and it has wiped out my iPod Touch three times already causing me to lose valuable timesheets, mileage logs, etc. Apple does not treat this as a business tool, but only as a personal multimedia toy. That is pathetic. We need a reliable backup utility.
I had the same trouble with PocketPCs though after Windows Mobile 6.5 and the crappy Windows Mobile Device Center that replaced the wonderful ActiveSync on Vista and Windows 7. There was no longer a proper backup utility and no ability to do a 2-way sync between the device and computer, only a 1-way sync overwriting everything on the other. What are software vendor’s thinking today?!

At one point, Microsoft and their DRM was not compatible with older versions of Media Player, but iTunes was backward compatible with earlier hardware, and still is. With that in mind, I went with a iPod early on. The industry caught up a few years later and I have bought Sandisk Sansa, Clip and Creative Zen MP3 players for my children. For 1/2 the price of an equivalent iPod, I did not blow a gasket when one of my daughters sat on her MP3 player and cracked the screen.
As for computers, I detest Apple for their high markups on hardware. For two years running, the first computer hacked at the CANSEC West? convention has been a Mac. For all the anti MS buzz, that tells me something. If the folks at Apple make such good stuff, and Mac’s are so much better, then why is a Mac hacked before a Linux or Windows OS computer? Apple is routinely slower at releasing security updates to identified problems than Microsoft. Apple is the Toyota of the computing world, except their problems have been ignored because their install base is not worth mentioning. If a big company like GE went all Mac, then Apple would be grilled in the media for their lack of effort like Mr. Toyoda was on capital hill. -

I can honestly say after owning a Sansa for about 5-8 years that the Ipod touch is a mega cool device. And I am a huge Apple hater. But man, this friggin thing does everything!!!
I avoid using Itunes because of issues with it wiping information from the Ipod. The only time I use Itunes is when I have to transfer videos to the device. My primary audio transfer/sync software is Media Monkey which is really easy to learn. I even taught my wife to use it and after a few lessons she has become the audio guru.
I bought the 64gig version only because the store offered a 18 month same as cash option. Otherwise I would still be using my trusty Sansa. Not a cheap purchase at all but I really enjoy a device that can play crisp video, sync folders via Dropbox, play tons of music and has an ever-expanding selection of apps.
